ITAPEMA IS THE 10TH BEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY IN ENVIRONMENT, A RANKING INDICATES

2022 Connected Smart Cities evaluated 14 indicators, including sanitation

The municipality of Itapema ranked as the 10th best city, according to environment indicators from 2022 Connected Smart Cities Ranking, carried out by Urban Systems Consultancy. The study identifies the most smart, humane, and sustainable cities, considering the principles of integration, innovation, collaboration, intelligence, and focus on the people.

Connected Smart Cities Ranking involves companies, entities, and governments in a platform whose mission is to find the DNA of innovation and improvements for smarter and more connected cities. The ranking collects information from all Brazilian municipalities with more than 50 thousand inhabitants (according to data calculated by the IBGE in 2021), totaling 680 cities: 49 of them with more than 500 thousand inhabitants; 277 of them constituted from 100 to 500 thousand inhabitants, and 350 of them ranging from 50 to 100 thousand inhabitants.

The evaluation of indicators in 11 sectors, namely: mobility, environment, entrepreneurship, education, energy, governance, urbanism, technology and innovation, security, and economy. The environmental indicators’ section is composed of 14 items, in which 8 of them are designed for the environment axis itself with priority access to water supply services, sewage collection and treatment, and solid waste recovery.

With private investments in sanitation, carried out by Conasa Águas de Itapema, 100% of the urban population receives treated water, 85% have sewage collection, and 100% of the collected sewage is treated. It is a percentage that differentiates the city in the country in the quality of the environment. The city has an excellence standard in combating the waste of treated water during its distribution, presenting an index 50% lower than the national average.
