Kitchen oil is among the main environment pollutants since one liter can contaminate 20 thousand liters of water. When thrown into rivers and seas, the oil fluctuates and impedes the entrance of light and oxygen, exterminating many species of aquatic life. When thrown on the soil, it impedes the penetration of rainwater and destroys the vegetation. In addition, when discharged into drains, it clogs the pipes causing an overflow of the sewage system.

To motivate the population of Salto to recycle used kitchen oil and prevent nature contamination, Conasa Sanesalto launched a permanent campaign to collect used oil in PET bottles to produce ecological soap, donating the soap bars to the community.

“Our challenge is to make the population aware that used oil can be transformed into other products such as soap. As an example, we are producing soap with oil already collected, and donating it to the community inside a package with an explanatory leaflet. However, families can produce soap at home. This way, they prevent oil to pollute nature, bring problems to society and have economic gains”, affirms Lia Dias, campaign coordinator.

The goal is to expand collection and get more people to deliver used oil to the Company from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm. “The more used kitchen oil we collect, the more soap is produced and more families are benefitted, and less kitchen oil is discharged in the environment. Product surplus which is not transformed into soap by the Company will be delivered to a cooperative for recycling”, says Dias.
