On March 22, World Water Day, Conasa Águas of Itapema brings to the city journalist André Trigueiro from Rede Globo, specialist in environmental journalism. He will give a lecture on “Water sustainable management: An urgent challenge”, at 7:30 pm, at the Itapema Beach Resort. Participation in the event is free of charge but registrations must be done in advance through the website www.aguasdeitapema.com.br/palestra

The objective of the lecture is to raise discussions on environment care and the relevance of environmental sustainability to the community to help improve their quality of life. The country is recognized internationally for its rivers and water abundance but not for the way it manages these precious resources. We are losing the war against pollution and waste. However we can still turn this game around”, says Trigueiro.

Journalist with post-graduation in Environment Management, André Trigueiro is editor-in-chief of the program Cidades e Soluções (Cities and Solutions) from Globo News and a columnist for Folha de S.Paulo. He is also professor of Environmental Geopolitics at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and the creator of the Environmental Journalism course at PUC-Rio. He has a vast experience in international coverages and in the production of reports and series, mainly on the environment and sustainability, having received many national and international awards for the quality and importance of his works.

Sanitation in Itapema

In almost 15 years of activity and with investments over R$ 166 million, Conasa Águas of Itapema establish universal access to water supply in the county. Total production capacity of the city at all ETAs is currently almost 50 million liters/day and potable water reservation is over 9 million liters. Untreated water reservoir ponds built by the Company have the capacity of 290 million liters, making Itapema self-sufficient during the whole year and the summer season when the city receives a floating population 10 times its number of inhabitants.

Sewage treatment and collection, which were inexistent in 2004 with the arrival of the Company, received investments in collection system installations, interceptors, emissaries and lifting stations, culminating with the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant in 2007. Currently 74% of the sewage system is treated, an index that will advance to 90% in 2020. Investments made by the Company guaranteed great improvements in the quality of life of the inhabitants of Itapema and the environment, projecting the city as a tourist destination and boosting the local economy.
